The truth about clouds for science

SPOTLIGHT | June 6, 2012

The coud report recommends how clouds could be used to help analyze the large volumes of data collected by astronomy projects such as Kepler, which is searching for Earth-like planets. This image shows the spacecraft's field of view. Image courtesy Carter Roberts, NASA Ames Research  Center.

The talk Bruce Berriman and Ewa Deelman gave last month was entitled, "How To Use Cloud Computing To Do Astronomy."

It might as well have been  called, "(Almost) Everything you ever wanted to know about cloud computing for science but didn't know that you should ask about."

Deelman, a computer scientist at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute, and Berriman, an astronomer and computer scientist based at Caltech, presented the talk on 9 May 2012 at Caltech's Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC). More recently, Berriman posted a PDF of their detailed slides after receiving multiple requests to do so.

And no wonder! The 40-page PDF summarizes research on the performance and cost of several computing options (with a focus on cloud computing) when running three different types of analysis. The presentation also covers a few alternatives, including campus grids, grid computing with the Open Science Grid, and private clouds.

You can download a copy of the presentation slides by clicking here (PDF).
