Editorial - Beam Day Simulation of the detection of a Higgs Boson.  Image courtesy of CERN Today, after more than a decade of meticulous preparation in the high-energy physics world—in theoretical frameworks, detector research and development, site construction, data simulations, analysis software, distributed computing infrastructures, networks and more—CERN’s Large Hadron Collider proton beam turns on and will begin circulating through its entire 27-km length.International Science Grid This Week congratulates the scientists, engineers, technicians, software developers, managers, coordinators, students, secretaries and all the other hard-working, talented and dedicated participants whose effort made this happen. The sheer volume of data that the LHC experiments will need to process became the driving force for developing the World-wide LHC Grid (wLCG), and hence Enabling Grids for E-SciencE (EGEE) in Europe and Open Science Grid in the United States. iSGTW celebrates with them, and thanks them, as

iSGTW Announcement - Digital geography in a Web 2.0 world

Announcement - Digital geography in a Web 2.0 worldDigital Geography in a Web 2.0 World Monday, 15 September 2008, 10am - 5pm Urbis Museum, Manchester, UKModern Web technologies and approaches have resulted in great changes for geography and geographers.  New research has been made possible by these new technologies.Interest in geography is great—200 million people have downloaded Google Earth—and things like Google Maps and route planners are now taken for granted. How are academics using these new technologies? How are these geographic tools being used by social scientists in general? At this free event we will examine these questions.  We expect it to be of particular interest to geographers, social scientists, academics, policy makers and students.  Attendees will learn about tools the National Centre for eSocial Science (NCeSS) is developing and how the social science community is embracing them.   We'll show urban simulations based on land use transport modeling, but run entirely throu

iSGTW - Image of the Week: One view of the LHC

Image of the week - One view of the LHC (Click on this link or the photo above to get the rotating, 360-degree, panoramic view, with natural sound.)One view of the Large Hadron Collider To give an idea of the enormity of the project at CERN, Peter McCready took a series of panoramic views of each of the  experiments. Last week, we showed ALICE, here's a view of one portion of the LHC. McCready creates these images using digital cameras mounted atop a customized tripod apparatus that allows him to take wrap-around images of up to a complete 360 rotation. Each image requires more than one hundred separate, individual photoraphs to be shot, which are then stitched together to form one seamless spherical image. The completed photo takes up 40MP. But soon enough, it will be counting the hours, and then the minutes . . .

Solutions to cutting-edge problems in biomedical science and health care will require the combined efforts of many kinds of experts.  Forward-looking leaders from the U.S. public health and computing domains are promoting HealthGrid.US as a forum for collaborative bio-health modeling, simulation and visualization. HealthGrid.US is affiliated with the Europe-based, international HealthGrid Association. The University of Chicago hosted HealthGrid 2008 in early June at its downtown Gleacher Center, the first non-European venue for the conference. HealthGrid.US organized the meeting, signaling its readiness to collaborate fully with its European colleagues and begin the process of defining a roadmap. “We’re discussing strategies for moving forward.   Announcement - Digital Repositories: Interoperability Using Grid Technologies, June 5, Barcelona Image courtesy of OGF The OGF-Europe Community Outreach Seminar, 5 June 2008, within OGF23 in Barcelona, Spain, will explore Digital Repositories (DR) from diverse perspectives, bringing valuable insight into domain requirements, user case studies and best practices. Special emphasis will be placed on interoperability and standardisation.Researchers increasingly depend on open access to information. DR enables access to the new knowledge base and encourages use of scientific content in a standardised, open way. Government agencies show signs of increased adoption, and the Humanities, in addition to Science, the early adopter, are starting to plug into such repositories. What is more, these new tools facilitate public appreciation and understanding of scientific and research advances. Seminar highlights:State-of-the-art and future visions with perspectives from government, research and industry. User case studies from specific do
