Last week saw computational scientists, technologists and researchers congregate at the Kassam Stadium, Oxford for the UK e-Science All Hands Meeting 2009 and the 5th IEEE International Conference on e-Science.
The conference was an opportunity for participants to share, discuss and advance the exciting research that has grown out of the e-Science programme as well as to highlight related activities from around the world.
Conversation and debate at the conference were lively but for those who missed out, the week's events were discussed and documented over at the GridCast blog.
Posts ranged from discussions on user engagement, classical art databases and, of course, the rainy British weather. As one of the key conference themes, there were many examples of e-science for the humanities, with the opening talk of the week given by Helen Bailey of the e-Dance p

“Multi- and many-core microprocessors are being deployed in a broad spectrum of applications including Clusters, Clouds and Grids. Both conventional multi- and many-core processors, such as Intel Nehalem and IBM Power7 processors, and unconventional many-core processors, such as NVIDIA Tesla and AMD FireStream GPUs, hold the promise of increasing performance through parallelism. However, GPU approaches in parallelism are distinctly different from those of conventional multi- and many-core processors, which raises new challenges: For example, how do we optimize applications for conventional multi- and many-core processors? How do we reengineer applications to take advant

Feature - Clouds in Geneva: the telecom view

Recently, Geneva played host to the impressive ITU Telecom World 2009, an event held only every few years and of significant importance to the telecommunications and ICT sectors. Attracting its fair share of world leaders, it has created quite a media splash – this is the first event I’ve attended that featured a special lounge marked ‘Heads of State’ (and no, they wouldn’t let me in).The CERN booth was a lot busier than some of the larger, slightly shinier contributions, whose extensive marbled floors had a tendency to look rather empty. The CERN booth on the other hand, was packed with visitors admiring the dashboard Google Earth and finding out more about the LHC and the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid.Given the buzz around cloud computing at EGEE’09 a few weeks ago, I was interested to hear the telecom community’s take on the subject. A distinguished panel of experts fr
