Visualizing urban expansion, shaping urbanization

The expansion of built-up urban land in Johannesburg, 1900 – 2000. Prepared for the New York University Stern Urbanization Project using data from the Atlas of Urban Expansion, published by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy in Massachusetts, US. Video courtesy IMAGINARIA3D in Quito, Ecuador.

Before 1800, less than 10% of the world's population lived in cities. By the end of this century, that number could rise to 85%. Earlier this year, iSGTW highlighted simulations that tracked the geographic expansion of five major world cities: Sao Paulo, Los Angeles, Paris, Chicago, and London.

The simulations, created using historical data from the Atlas of Urban Expansion, reveal details of city sprawl. Part of the Urbanization Project at the Stern School of Business at New York University, US, the collection now includes 30 cities.

Using data from Johannesburg to Beijing, researchers continue to gain insights that can shape urbanization in new ways – speeding up progress, and leading to improvements in the quality of life for billions of people.
