CERN openlab recently entered its fifth phase, which will run until the end of 2017. Now, for the first time in its history, it has extended beyond the CERN community to include other major European and international research laboratories. 

Domenico Talia will speak about big-data mining and knowledge discovery at ISC Big Data in Heidelberg, Germany, on 1-2 October. Talia, who is a professor of computer engineering at the University of Calabria in Italy, will explain how cloud computing can offer effective support for addressing both the computational and data-storage needs of big-data mining and parallel analytics applications. In an in-depth interview, he tells iSGTW about his research in this area and argues that it’s time for the public sector to invest in big-data, so as to provide better services to citizens.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS), in which millions or billions of DNA nucleotides are sequenced in parallel, is the backbone of novel discoveries in life sciences, anthropology, social sciences, biomedical sciences and plant sciences. Last week, ISC Cloud ’13 was held in Heidelberg, Germany. Delegates at the event agreed on the importance of supporting research with ‘utility computing’ models, whereby cloud-based, on-demand HPC services are used ad hoc to support in-house computing resources at times of heavy demand. Also, example use cases of HPC in the cloud were given and the importance of training was discussed.

iSGTW speaks to CERN openlab’s Sverre Jarp, ahead of this month’s inaugural ISC Big Data conference in Heidelberg, Germany. Jarp, who is the general chair of the event, picks his highlights from the conference program and tells us why big data presents exciting opportunities, but also poses challenges, for enterprise and HPC alike.
