The HP-SEE project has now come to an end. The project has been working to establish high-performance computing infrastructure in south-east Europe, and has been supporting a wide range of research communities in the region in its use.

Through this work — as well as that of previous projects — significant steps have been taken towards achieving the European vision of inclusive and smart growth, based on knowledge and innovation.

EGI.eu and the University of Messina provided training on Europe's largest scientific federated Cloud at the Cloud Summerschool Almere

For the first time ever, students received practical training access to Europe's largest federated scientific Cloud. Tutors from the University of Messina at the Cloud Summerschool Almere provided practical examples on sensor Cloud computing. Students gained access to the EGI Federated Cloud and ran these examples on resource providers in the Czech Republic (CESnet) and in Spain (CESGA).

When tapeworms of the species Ligula intestinalis infect fish, the consequences are gory. The parasites grow to fill the host's body cavity, leading to behavioral changes and high mortality rates. Not only is it bad news for the fish themselves, but it's also a major problem for the fish farming industry, which is why scientists keep an eye on where the parasites live and how their geographical distribution evolves. Read this recent EGI.eu case study to find out how grid computing has come to the rescue in enabling scientists to better trace the tapeworms infecting Northern African fish back to Europe.

Horizon 2020, the European Commission’s next funding cycle, is set to launch in January 2014. With less than a year to go, you may be wondering: what is Horizon 2020? What makes it different to the frameworks that preceded it? And what are the implications, both for the e-infrastructure projects themselves and the researchers who benefit from them? e-Science Briefing’s Stefan Janusz gives an overview of the road ahead...

CERN and the Wigner Research Centre for Physics last week inaugurated the Hungarian data center in Budapest, marking the completion of the facility hosting the extension for CERN computing resources. About 500 servers, 20,000 computing cores, and 5.5 petabytes of storage are already operational at the site. The capacity at Wigner will be remotely managed from CERN, substantially extending the capabilities of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid Tier-0 activities.
