Discover how the DNANANO project has been using the Curie supercomputer — a PRACE tier-0 system — to help design nanocages for targeted drug delivery.

Simulating one of these nanocages for just 100 nanoseconds would take nearly a decade on a normal workstation. However, by accessing PRACE resources, the research group was able to carry out multiple simulations of this kind in less than thirty days.

Professor Stephan Roche of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Spain is one of the early adopters of high-performance computing in Europe’s Graphene Flagship initiative. His latest project has received 22 million core hours from PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe. 

Roche has fifteen years of experience in developing novel algorithms and computational approaches that can be used to investigate quantum transporting in complex materials such as graphene. Here, we speak to him about his experience of working with PRACE.

Domenico Talia will speak about big-data mining and knowledge discovery at ISC Big Data in Heidelberg, Germany, on 1-2 October. Talia, who is a professor of computer engineering at the University of Calabria in Italy, will explain how cloud computing can offer effective support for addressing both the computational and data-storage needs of big-data mining and parallel analytics applications. In an in-depth interview, he tells iSGTW about his research in this area and argues that it’s time for the public sector to invest in big-data, so as to provide better services to citizens.

eResearch NZ 2014 was recently held at Waikato University in Hamilton, New Zealand. This was the fifth year of the conference, which once again brought together a wide range of researchers and high-performance computing experts from across the country, as well as from further afield.

Last week, iSGTW attended the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC’14) in Leipzig, Germany. The event featured a range of speakers representing a wide variety of research domains. Awards given by PRACE and Germany’s Gauss Centre for Supercomputing highlighted some of the outstanding research on show at the event. And, of course, the new TOP500 list of the world’s fastest supercomputers was announced.

After serving fusion research for four years, Europe's High Performance Computer for Fusion has now completed its operations, with fusion modeling work moving to the significantly more powerful Helios computer in Rokkasho, Japan. Helios is a Japanese-European facility and has a peak performance of around 1.5 petaFLOPS.

Karlheinz Meier, one of the three co-directors of Europe’s Human Brain Project, will deliver a keynote talk at this summer's ISC'14 event in Leipzig, Germany.

Funded by the European Commission, the Human Brain Project is an ambitious endeavor, with the intention of greatly advancing the understanding of the human brain using cutting-edge computer technologies.
