Blue-sky thinking for clouds in Heidelberg

iSGTW recently attended the ISC Cloud '14 conference in Heidelberg, Germany. The event focused on the intersection between cloud and high-performance computing (HPC), with in-depth first-hand reports on the latest technological developments in these fields. Researchers from a wide range of organizations discussed their work and offered practical recommendations about how to best utilize cloud-based computing.

Data in the DNA: transforming biology and data storage

Ewan Birney, associate director of the European Bioinformatics Institute, says that biology has now transformed to become a 'big-data science'. Ahead of his keynote talk at this month’s EUDAT 2nd conference, he explains that the field faces both what he terms 'blue-' and 'white-collar problems' in handling this data deluge.

Plus, could DNA really be the future of data storage? Birney believes it could be. "DNA is remarkable," he says. "Just one gram of DNA can store about a petabyte’s worth of data… it's estimated that you could put the whole internet into the size of a van!"

A big cloud for big science

Helix Nebula - the Science Cloud is a new European collaboration to provide computing platforms to propel science. As a result, research should be faster and cheaper to perform, such as setting up an earthquake analysis system in a day instead of a month or simpler analysis of large genomes from mammals.
