64-million atom simulation – a new weapon against HIV

In the fight against HIV, better understanding of the structure of the virus could lead to new antiretroviral drugs. University of Illinois researchers recently used molecular simulations on the Blue Waters supercomputer to determine the chemical structure of the HIV capsid, which plays a key role in debilitating the immune system.

Blue Waters enables groundbreaking computational science

Blue Waters, entering full deployment, is now crunching numbers around the clock at the National Petascale Computing Facility at the University of Illinois, US. Led by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications Blue Waters is funded by the US National Science Foundation to address the most challenging compute-, memory-, and data-intensive problems in science and engineering.
