Editorial: iSGTW and the future

This week marks the 100th issue of International Science Grid This Week.

We have come a long way since our first issue: this publication now has over 4,000 subscribers, 50,000 visits per month, and a Google page ranking of 8 on a scale of 10. (By way of comparison, Google itself has a 10, and Sony corporation has a 7.)

Since the beginning, when this publication began life in the United States as Science Grid This Week, this newsletter has sought to share stories of grid-empowered science and scientific discoveries, by acting as an impartial reporter of science grids.

So, what does the future hold for this publication?

Feature - Looking back at iSGTW No. 1

Where are they now?

The very first issue of ISGTW first led with a feature on interoperability, and the attempt to make a seamless global grid.

The same issue covered the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) on the hunt for gravitational waves, and WISDOM's second data challenge targeting the malaria-causing parasite.

In today’s cyber-climate, a single attack can affect multiple organizations, increasing the need for security professionals to collaborate in both incident prevention and response.

NCSA’s Palantir framework lets investigators share data and strategies, and track down attackers.

So, we all got a good look at Istanbul during EGEE ’08, and had a chance to meet our colleagues, learn about new developments in the grid, attend lectures and seminars, and explore a bit of Istanbul and its culture—such as visiting the Blue Mosque, or bargaining for goods in the Grand Bazaar.

But what did others think of us attendees and our culture? In particular, what did The Economist observe of us?
