PRACE 11th Call for Proposals connects the international HPC ecosystem

The 11th PRACE Regular Call for Proposals yielded 107 eligible proposals of which 18 were awarded a total of almost 513 million core hours. This brings the total awarded projects to 412 and the total awarded core hours to 10.7 million.

The 18 awarded projects are led by principal investigators from 7 different European countries. This Call also welcomed scientists and researchers from USA and South Korea as collaborators in several projects.

Seven overall scientific domains are represented: 3 projects are linked to the fields of Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Life Sciences; 4 to Chemistry; 2 to Earth System Sciences; 2 to Engineering; 3 to Fundamental Physics; 1 to Mathematics and Computer Sciences and 3 to Universe Sciences.

The largest allocation under the 11th Call is the project entitledCONTQCDNf3 - The continuum limit of QCD with three dynamical quark flavours led byDr. Mauro Papinutto from University La Sapienza Rome. The project received 74 million Core Hours on FERMI @ CINECA, Italyand is also supported by the DFG (German Research Foundation).

A number of awards support research which has also been identified as excellent by other European grant-awarding bodies. One PRACE-awarded project is linked to the H2020 EURO fusion Enabling Research Project:JOREK. Non-linear modelling of MHD instabilities and their control in tokamaks led by Dr. Marina Becoulet. The project received 13.2 million Core Hours on MareNostrum @ BSC, Spain. Under the 11th Call PRACE also awarded resources to seven ERC-funded projects while three other projects receive grants under various national programmes.

Two projects are linked to industry, involving TURBOMECA (SAFRAN Group-France) as project leader in the field of combustion of turbomachines, and INTEL (France) with NAG (Numerical Algorithm Services-UK) as project collaborators in a FP7 project related to the development of Exascale solvers and algorithms.

The 12th Call for Proposals for PRACE Project Access (Tier-0) will open in September 2015.

Selected proposals will receive allocations to PRACE resources from March 2016 to March 2017.
