Judging of the annual Wellcome Image Awards took place in November 2014. Wellcome Trust, a UK-based biomedical research charity, announced 20 finalists that span a range of disciplines — and a range of imaging techniques like this micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scan of the skull and front legs of a Tuatara. The winners were announced on March 18, 2015, with Michael Frank taking top prize for his 'Pregnant pony uterus' photograph.
"The breath-taking riches of the imagery that science generates are so important in telling stories about research and helping us to understand often abstract concepts," says Adam Rutherford, a scientist and judge for the Wellcome Image Awards, in a news release. "It’s not just about imaging the very small either. It’s about understanding life, death, sex, and disease: the cornerstones of drama and art."
A leading resource for medical imagery, Wellcome Images recently shared 100,000 free images with Wikimedia Commons.
