Learn about LiDAR

Some of our regular readers may remember admiring the fantastic images created by LiDAR featured in a previous image of the week.

LiDAR, a method of using lasers to gather detailed topographical data, generates large amounts of data. One repository for LiDAR data is located at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, or via the OpenTopography web portal online.

If you're interested in learning more about this technique, you're in luck. OpenTopography and the Southern California Earthquake Center joined forces to produce this fantastic educational video, entitled LiDAR - Illuminating Earthquake Hazards. The video provides an introduction to LiDAR technology as well as the earthquake science LiDAR data enables.
