This week, Peer1, who do science illustrations, have produced a nifty graphic about supercomputers that spans about 70 years of progress.
It's a lengthy graphic, so large in fact that we couldn't reproduce it all here. But most of the key points are there - and in colourful, bite-sized chunks to boot. It covers the history and the evolution of supercomputers (which you can see below), as well as a comparison of the world's top supercomputers (yes, it includes the K Computer in Japan) and an overview of the science and other research being done on them (did you know they are used to research nuclear weapons systems?). It finishes with some predictions of where supercomputers are going: "By 2018, supercomputers are expected to be able to process information on a similar level to the human brain." (The future of computing is, of course, illustrated with a cyborg head - what else?)
