The BOINC-based BBC Climate Change Experiment has won the prestigious PRIX EUROPA award in the Internet category. Over 250 000 volunteers downloaded the BBC Climate Change Experiment. Results from the experiment indicate that the UK should expect a 4°C rise in temperature by 2080, with warmer winters and reduced summer rainfall. Different regions around the world are predicted to experience varying levels of warming. According to the experiment, New Zealand faces a smaller temperature rise than the UK’s 4°C change, while Alaska should prepare for a greater increase. To create the BBC Climate Change Experiment, the BBC teamed up with Climateprediction.net, a consortium of research organisations led by the University of Oxford and including the Met Office, the University of California Berkeley, the London School of Economics, the Open University, the University of Reading and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The experiment was funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council, with additional support from Microsoft Corporation. PRIX EUROPA is billed as a market-place and forum for ideas and trends in the European media scene and awarded a total prize sum of 78,000 Euros. |
