EGEE-II: Grid for Research

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE is a major European initiative to develop a grid for researchers. EGEE-II is the second phase of a four-year program, and includes 91 partners in 32 countries, with many other groups contributing to the project’s work.

EGEE was originally developed to make grid resources available to European researchers, but is rapidly expanding to work with the global grid community. EGEE-II works closely with other grid initiatives such as DEISA, the European supercomputing grid, Japan’s NAREGI, and the Open Science Grid in the United States.

NYS Grid: Spreading the Word
Last summer, a collection of universities and labs in New York State gathered with the goal of creating a cyberinfrastructure initiative that will make it easy for regional scientists to manage data and use imaging software.

NYS Grid, New York State’s seven-month-old cyberinfrastructure, may be in its infancy but it is growing, with lofty goals for the future.

Open Science Grid Workshop in Argentina
For some Latin American students, a recent workshop held in Santa Fe, Argentina, may be an important step towards a lifetime of working with grids.

The “Hands-on Workshop in Grid Computing” gave young scientists with almost no background in distributed computing the ability to use grids in their research.

Scholarships Available for Masters Program
Funded places are still available for entry in September 2007 to the 2007/08 e-Science Masters program at the University of Edinburgh.

Students with, or expecting, an honors degree in science or computer science, and with a proven competence in computer programming are encouraged to apply. Training Session Following OGF20 and EGEE User Forum
On Saturday and Sunday, May 12–13, following the OGF20 and EGEE User Forum in Manchester, United Kingdom, EGEE, ETICS and OMII-Europe projects will host free training sessions.

One training session, organized by EGEE, will focus on developing applications using gLite middleware. More information, including how to register, is available from the session Web site.

The other training session, organized by the ETICS and OMII-Europe projects, attendees will learn how to build and test grid middleware and applications using the ETICS Service, and how OMII-Europe works with ETICS to ensure interoperability.
